Yala (Ruhuna) National Park
Situated 309 km. south of Colombo, Yala is located in the southeastern corner of the island. The 1250 sq km park is home to leopards, crocodile, elephant, deer, sambar, bear, wild boar, wild buffalo and peacock and may varieties of birds including migratory birds such as flamingos. The uniqueness of the park is it's many different habitat diversities such as dense jungles, lagoons and open park areas, a beautiful sea front and rocky outcrops.
Udawalawe National Park
Udawalawe National Park was established in 1972 with an area of 30,800 hectares. Wildlife reports say there are about 500 elephants in the park and they often roam in herds of up to 100. Leopards, buffalo, deer and sloth bears keep them company along with mongooses, bandicoots, foxes, water monitor lizards and crocodiles.
Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage
Situated on route to Kandy the hill district from the capital Colombo, Pinnawela elephant orphanage is a must see for anyone visiting Sri Lanka. The orphanage feeds, nurses and houses young elephants found abandoned by their mothers, and harmed by other forces like poaching. It is a popular visit for children and adults alike for watching the baby elephants being cared for. At Pinnawela animals are allowed to roam freely during the day and a herd structure allowed to form.
